When should an excuse note be submitted?
Anytime a student is absent from school a note should be submitted no later than 3 days after the student returns to school.

  • Student name, student number, dates of absences, and reason for absence
  • Anytime a student has a doctor’s appointment or sees a medical professional for an illness, please submit a medical note.
I received an attendance letter from my school. What does this mean?

Use this link for a deeper explanation of what the attendance letter means and what you should do if you receive one.

How do I update parent/guardian contact information for my child's school?

Log into Campus Parent Portal to update information. Schools must have updated phone numbers and/or email addresses to communicate important information about attendance.

What happens when my student is late to school or class?

Each school has their own tardy policy with potential progressive discipline. Students will be marked tardy unless one of the following applies per CCSD Regulation 5113:

Secondary students who arrive to class more than thirty minutes late will be marked absent for that class period only.

Elementary students will be marked absent for half of the day if they miss one hour and fifty-five minutes of the instructional day and marked absent for the entire day if more than three hours and forty-five minutes of the instructional day are missed.

How many absences will impact my student’s credits or advancement to the next grade level?
  • For secondary students, they can lose credit after 10 unexcused absences (regular school schedule) or after 8 unexcused absences (block scheduling) for each semester.
  • For elementary students, administration may retain a student after 20 unexcused absences.
The school has notified me that my student has been absent, but I know they went to school that day. What can I do to fix this?
Call the school’s attendance office to make a correction or your child’s teacher to verify they were in class.
My student is refusing to go to school, what resources are available?
  • Contact your school to get a referral to a school counselor, social worker, or request an attendance officer to conduct a home visit.
  • Visit CCSD Mental Health Resources for additional support
I am struggling to get my child to school due to transportation, are there resources available?
Why did an attendance officer come to my home?
Attendance officers are dispatched to student homes for a variety of reasons. Typically, schools will request an officer after 3 unexcused absences. The attendance officer visits homes to support students and families to provide necessary information and resources to help your child have positive attendance.
Are there other educational options available for my child?

Please see Educational Options information document for more information.

How do I know if my child is chronically absent?

If your child is absent 10% or more of the enrolled days, they are considered chronically absent. Excused and unexcused absences are calculated for chronic absenteeism. This amounts to about 18 days per school year.

How does chronic absenteeism impact elementary students?

Consistent attendance in kindergarten is essential for building important early learning skills. Frequent absences can make it harder for children to develop strong foundations in reading and math, which may impact their ability to keep up with their classmates and meet grade-level expectations in later years. I need additional help, who can I contact?

It is always best to contact your child’s school first to get information regarding their attendance. If you need additional help, you can also contact the Office of Chronic Absenteeism and Attendance Enforcement by clicking here.
