What happens when my student is late to school or class?

Each school has their own tardy policy with potential progressive discipline. Students will be marked tardy unless one of the following applies per CCSD Regulation 5113:

Secondary students who arrive to class more than thirty minutes late will be marked absent for that class period only.

Elementary students will be marked absent for half of the day if they miss one hour and fifty-five minutes of the instructional day and marked absent for the entire day if more than three hours and forty-five minutes of the instructional day are missed.

I received an attendance letter from my school. What does this mean?

When should an excuse note be submitted?

Anytime a student is absent from school a note should be submitted no later than 3 days after the student returns to school.

What should be included in the absent notes?

Student name, student number, dates of absences, and reason for absence
Anytime a student has a doctor’s appointment or sees a medical professional for an illness, please submit a medical note.

How many absences will impact my student’s credits or advancement to the next grade level?

For secondary students, they can lose credit after 10 unexcused absences (regular school schedule) or after 8 unexcused absences (block scheduling) for each semester.
For elementary students, administration may retain a student after 20 unexcused absences.

My student is refusing to go to school, what resources are available?

Contact your school to get a referral to a school counselor, social worker, or request an attendance officer to conduct a home visit.

The school has notified me that my student has been absent, but I know they went to school that day. What can I do to fix this?

Call the school’s attendance office to make a correction or your child’s teacher to verify they were in class.

I am struggling to get my child to school due to transportation, are there resources available?

Contact CCSD Transportation to see if your child is eligible for transportation.

Why did an attendance officer come to my home?

Attendance officers are dispatched to student homes for a variety of reasons. Typically, schools will request an officer after 3 unexcused absences. The attendance officer visits homes to support students and families to provide necessary information and resources to help your child have positive attendance.
